Careers Within Academia – Mentoring

Arqus Mentoring Programme for Early-Stage Researchers

This programme is intended for late-stage PhDs and early-stage PostDocs who are interested in professional support and strategic advice during the first phases of their academic career. The goal of the mentoring programme is to provide a framework within which to discuss career planning, strategic decisions, work-life balance and similar issues that might arise. The international nature of this programme offers a different perspective on the challenges and opportunities of research. The 9-month programme lasts from October to June, applications open each year in March/April.

Key aspects of this programme:

  • Mentees will be matched with an established researcher from another Arqus University, taking into account mentees’ preferences and needs (i.e. the Arqus team will contact mentors on the mentees’ behalf to ask them to participate in this programme).
  • Mentor and mentee meet for a minimum of four (virtual) sessions over the course of nine months, dates and goals will be set by the participants individually.
  • An in-person visit of the mentee at the mentor’s home institution is highly encouraged, but not mandatory. Information about potential funding opportunities will be provided.
  • Mentees will take part in four one-and-a-half-hour online training sessions offering input and opportunity for exchange on how to better navigate academia and how to respond to common challenges (e.g. research organisation and mental health, funding opportunities in the EU).
  • To ensure a clear focus on strategic (personal) decisions and/or further career steps of interdisciplinary researchers, guiding materials will be provided to mentors and mentees.
  • Mentors will have the opportunity to participate in regular mentors’ lounges.
  • An in-person kick-off meeting in late September/early October will provide mentees the opportunity to connect and exchange experiences, building the peer group for the next nine months (funding for travel and accommodation will be available).

Arqus Alumni Mentorship Programme

This programme aims to enhance the culture of knowledge and network sharing amongst current students at the Arqus Universities and alumni. This is accomplished by matching Arqus alumni as mentors with current students as mentees to counsel and support students in work-integrated learning and in the transition to the world of work, especially in transnational contexts. Local Mentoring Offers

Many of the Arqus Universities offer their own mentoring programmes with a variety of different aims and formats – many of them focus on getting in touch with a mentor from business/industry, others connect mentees with alumni and some are about getting in touch with experienced researchers.
