New workshop on intercultural competence for staff members

17 December2021

The interactive workshop “Exploring Personal and Cultural Values and Conflict Styles – How to Engage into a Dialogue” organised by the University of Graz will take place online next 17th December.

In an increasingly internationalised academic environment, university staff members are more frequently in contact with students and fellow staff of different language and cultural backgrounds. In some cases, communication can lead to misunderstandings or even frustration on either side due to insufficient language proficiency or intercultural understanding.

This workshop starts with a short value questionnaire, followed by an exercise about how to negotiate values in difficult interactions. Participants will complete a self-test on intercultural conflict styles and practice how to deal with similar and different conflict styles across cultures to solve conflicts constructively.

There are no prerequisites for this course, but participants are asked to join in with their microphone and computer camera on.

Target group:

Academic and administrative staff of the Arqus Alliance partner universities.

Workshop leader:

Dr Christine Mattl, Center for Social Competence, University of Graz.

Date and time (CET): 17th December 2021, 13:00–17:00.

Please register here by 10th December 2021

Fee:

The workshop is free of charge for staff members of the Arqus Alliance partner universities.

For any enquiries, please contact Simone Klinge

Please note: In order to ensure the quality of the session and for the benefit of the participants, the number of participants for this workshop is limited to a maximum of 14. There are 2 workshop places per partner university and these will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. If there are fewer than 2 registrations from one university, the remaining places will be allocated in list order regardless of affiliation to a partner university.

The Arqus workshop series on language and cross-cultural competence is offered in the framework of Action Line 4 Multilingual and Multicultural University (sub-line 4.5), led by Leipzig University. These workshops target academic and administrative staff at partner universities and focus on specific topics such as working and teaching through the medium of English, intercultural awareness in the classroom and outside, and inclusive language.
