English as a Medium of Instruction in the university context is a current research topic that encompasses many aspects of teaching, pedagogy and language learning methods. By the end of Part I of the workshop, participants will have gained an overview of theoretical ideas based on current academic discussions in the field. Part II of the workshop will focus on the applications of these theories into practice.

There are no prerequisites for this course, but participants are asked to join in with their microphone and computer camera on. Participants are encouraged to actively participate, bringing in ideas and practical activities to share with others. It is possible to take part in one (Part I or Part II) or both of these two independent workshops.

Target group:

Experienced language teachers and any instructors who are preparing to teach their course content in English.

Workshop leader:

Part II: 27th January 2022, 16:00–18:15.

For any enquiries, please contact Jupp Möhring at al4_arqus@uni-leipzig.de.

Please note: In order to ensure the quality of the session and for the benefit of the participants, the number of participants for this workshop is limited to a maximum of 28. There are 4 workshop places per partner university and these will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. If there are less than 4 registrations from one university, the remaining places will be allocated in list order regardless of affiliation to a partner university.

The Arqus workshop series on language and cross-cultural competence is offered in the framework of Action Line 4 Multilingual and Multicultural University (sub-line 4.5), led by Leipzig University. These workshops target academic and administrative staff at partner universities and focus on specific topics such as working and teaching through the medium of English, intercultural awareness in the classroom and outside, and inclusive language.
