Format: Online

Open to: Academics & researchers, Admin. Staff, Early Post-docs, Teachers

The Arqus Alliance and the University of Graz invite instructors from Arqus Universities to the Arqus Teaching Innovation Workshop on beneficial self-study settings. Join us on Friday, 12 December from 9:00 to 13:00 CET.

Learning is an active process that requires students not only to absorb content during classroom sessions but also to engage with materials independently by working through new concepts, applying them, and reinforcing what they have learned.

The workshop, led by Elisabeth Weber, a higher education expert and university instructor at BOKU University (Vienna), focuses on task design, material selection, and methodological approaches that align with sustainable learning principles.

Participants will explore how to prepare and conduct didactically sound self-study settings that help students take ownership of their learning (even in the age of AI), learning how to intertwine self-study successfully and attendance phases to support students before, during, and after class.

This session is aimed at Arqus Alliance instructors who seek to implement or further develop self-study phases in their teaching, regardless of their discipline or prior teaching experience.

Register by 5 December!

Workshop content

The workshop will answer the following questions:

  • What promotes self-regulated learning in self-study settings, and how are these didactically prepared and conducted?
  • How can materials and tasks be prepared so that they support students’ independent learning?
  • What are the criteria for task quality, clarity, and motivational design?
  • Which methods are particularly suitable for self-study?
  • How can attendance and self-study phases be meaningfully connected?

Learning outcomes

After finishing this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Didactically prepare and conduct self-study settings within their courses.
  • Design and provide supportive materials and learning tasks for student self-study.
  • Select and apply suitable learning and teaching methods that foster sustainable, independent learning.
  • Intertwine contact and self-study phases effectively, ensuring coherence and continuity in the learning process.

Methodology

The workshop will work in various interactive settings using a variety of teaching and learning methods ranging from individual reflection to pair and group work, discussions, and short theoretical input sessions.
