Open Education

What is Open Education?

Open Education refers to an educational approach that emphasises the removal of barriers, both technical and financial, to provide access to learning opportunities for a wide and diverse audience. In an Open Education framework, knowledge and educational resources are shared freely and openly as well as with no costs to users. Therefore Open Education aims to make materials accessible, flexible in use and inclusive. Those materials are described as Open Educational Resources (OER) that are openly available to the public.

OER can include a wide range of didactical methods and educational materials such as textbooks, lectures, lesson plans, or multimedia resources.

What are the benefits for you?

  • Fostering open access to and inclusion in the scientific educational ecosystem as well as high-quality educational resources
  • Providing learners with diverse, high-quality, and customisable learning materials
  • Minimising effort by openly sharing and reusing educational resources on similar topics
  • Enabling global open accessibility of OER and access to high-quality educational resources also for learners who do not have the opportunity to participate in scientific qualification courses in their place of residence

Requirements

  • Knowledge of:
    • Didactic methods of online teaching
    • individual learning types and needs of learners
    • suitable file formats, open licences and publication and/or learning platforms
    • suitable ways to disseminate your OER to your intended target group, e.g. social media, newsletters or OER catalogues
    • technical requirements
  • Keep in mind to reduce barriers, also for disabled people, thus create accessible and barrier-free media
