Online event on the occasion of European Doctoral Day: The challenge of mobility in the development of doctoral journeys

13 may 2026

On the occasion of European Doctoral Day, Arqus will bring together doctoral candidates, early-career researchers and institutional representatives to reflect on key challenges shaping doctoral training in Europe, with a one-hour session dedicated to the role of mobility in the construction of doctoral pathways.

The session will open with an institutional perspective, highlighting the strategic role of international mobility in doctoral education. This first part will address how universities and European University Alliances frame, support and promote mobility within doctoral training, as well as the challenges involved in aligning institutional strategies with doctoral candidates’ needs. It will provide a broader policy and governance context for understanding the place of mobility in doctoral pathways across Europe. In a second part, a roundtable discussion will bring together doctoral candidates and recent PhD graduates to share first-hand experiences of mobility, discuss practical and personal challenges, and engage in an open exchange with the audience.

The session aims to foster dialogue between institutions and early-career researchers on how mobility can be better integrated into doctoral training across Europe.

The registration form will be available soon.
