AIFRS launches a new Arqus International Colloquium on Modern Spanish and Portuguese History

The Arqus International Forum on Romance Studies (AIFRS) invites academics and students to participate in its new Arqus International Colloquium on Modern Spanish and Portuguese History. The first edition will be devoted to “Conversion, Anti-Jewish polemics and Inquisition in Iberian context (15th to 17th Centuries)” and will last from 9th October 2023 to 20th March 2024.

This first edition includes face-to-face and hybrid format sessions at the University of Granada:

1st lecture: “The Portuguese Converso Phenomenon: A Conceptual and Historiographical Approach”

  • Axel Kaplan Szyld (Bar-Ilan University / University of Alcalá).
  • Monday, 9th October, 12:30-14:30 CEST.
  • Venue: Concha Félez Hall at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Granada.

2nd lecture: “From Adversus Iudaeos to Adversus Conversos: Continuities and Changes in Portuguese Anti-Jewish Polemics”

  • Axel Kaplan Szyld (Bar-Ilan University / University of Alcalá).
  • Wednesday, 11th October, 12:30-14:30 CEST.
  • Venue: Concha Félez Hall at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Granada.

3rd lecture: “Portuguese New Christians in Political and Ideological Dynamics in the Hispanic Monarchy”

  • Juan Ignacio Pulido Serrano (University of Alcalá).
  • Wednesday, 15th November, 15:30-17:00 CET.
  • Hybrid format. The face-to-face session will take place at Room 4 of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Granada.

4th lecture: “Censorship and banned books in Portugal and Brazil (16th and 17th Centuries): the consequences of Regula VII”

  • Monday, 4th March, 12:30-14:00 CET.
  • Room 43, Faculty of Arts (University of Granada).

5th lecture: “Between Messianism, Millenarianism, and Reason of State: Revisiting Father Vieira and His Position on Jews and Conversos”

  • Claude B. Stuczynski (Bar-Ilan University).
  • Wednesday, 13th March, 15:30-17:00 CET.
  • Hybrid format. Room for the face-to-face session to be determined.

6th lecture: “Breaking the Seal: Confession and the Inquisition in Portugal”

  • Andrea Arcuri (University of Granada / Società Dante Alighieri, Granada Committee).
  • Wednesday, 20th March, 15:30-17:00 CET.
  • Hybrid format. Room for the face-to-face session to be determined.

Registration is not needed for the first two face to face conferences. Detailed information about the registration process for the hybrid conferences will be provided soon.
