The summer edition of the Arqus Café just wrapped up (10 March–30 May) and we have lots to report on. Read this article to hear more about the summer edition, the Anniversary Celebration on 9 May, the upcoming edition (6 October–12 December), Language Dives on the European Day of Languages (26 September), and the in-person cafés.

This semester, the Arqus Café celebrated an important anniversary: It was the tenth edition of this successful programme. This milestone was celebrated on Europe Day (9 May) with a special edition of the cafés. The event started with a welcome by the Arqus coordinator Dorothy Kelly and the Arqus Café facilitator Meike Münster. Next, the directors of the language centres at the Arqus Universities and representatives from the Arqus Plurilingualism and Intercultural Hub welcomed the group in their respective languages and talked about their language learning processes and the importance of plurilingualism at their universities and within the Alliance.

Apart from this celebratory event, the regular cafés ran from 10 March to 30 May.  This time, we were able to offer 13 languages in 31 cafés.

  • Arabic
  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Irish
  • Italian
  • Lithuanian
  • Persian
  • Polish
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish
  • Turkish
  • Ukranian

Overall, there were 347 registrations and 847 visits – we are happy to again have had such great participation numbers. And 65 participants filled out our evaluation form for the edition and gave very good feedback on the Arqus Cafés:

“I liked the different topics for each week that the tutors prepared because I was able to think, have opinions on and discuss them well with their help.” –  Arqus Café  participant

“This was a great opportunity to communicate with native speakers of another language and improve your level of live communication.” –  Arqus Café participant

Thank you to all the tutors who made this possible!

Upcoming edition and European Day of Languages

The next edition of the online cafés will run from 6 October to 12 December.

It will start with another big event: Arqus Language Dives on the European Day of Languages on 26 September. We will offer a dive into a number of languages so that you can get familiar with a new language. You will learn how to introduce yourself in this language and be able to have a mini conversation by the end of the session.

We are looking for volunteers who would like to offer a language that they speak as their first language. Please register by 30 July at the latest. We would love to see you there!

In-person cafés

In Leipzig, in-person cafés are still running until 9 July. Nine languages in 14 cafés are offered.
