From 2 to 4 December, the University of Salerno in Italy hosted the NEOLAiA Annual Conference 2025. In line with the strengthening of ties with other universities, our Alliance Coordinator, Dorothy Kelly, was invited to join the conversation and had the opportunity to share key points on how the alliances enable flexible mobility, new joint programmes, shared research environments, and more inclusive opportunities across borders.

In her interview with Ida Andersson-Norrie (Örebro University, Sweden), Dorothy was asked about the present and future of the European higher education area, to which Dorothy responded by highlighting the tendency to re-nationalise the transformation of potential of the Bologna process. “This process, which was born with great expectations, seems to be stuck half way along” – she explained – but at the same time, “European Universities Initiatives have proven to be an excellence driver for the European higher education area to return to some of the basics and to many of the issues which have plagued ‘Bologna’ since its inception”. She expressed her hope that, through the exchange of ideas on how to implement the agreements reached at European level, the spirit of the Bologna process will be revitalised in the future.
