EcoUnity day brings sustainable fashion and community spirit to Granada

24 Feb 2026On 9 February, the EcoUnity Day workshop took place at the Espacio V Centenario Building in Granada, gathering students and local community members for an inspiring day of learning, creativity and collaboration.
Organised by a group of sustainability-driven students from the University of Granada, and supported by the Arqus European University Alliance, the workshop was made possible thanks to Arqus Student Co-designed Projects initiative. Lydia Camacho García led the promotion of the activity at the University of Granada. The event was further strengthened through the collaboration of the Spanish Red Cross and several university departments, as well as the active involvement of members of the local community.

This edition of EcoUnity Day focused on upcycling as a practical and creative approach to sustainability. Participants had the opportunity to learn how to use a sewing machine and apply basic sewing techniques to transform existing garments into renewed, functional pieces. By giving new life to old clothes, attendees explored accessible and affordable ways to adopt more environmentally friendly habits in their daily lives.
Beyond the practical session, the workshop also created space for reflection and dialogue. Discussions addressed the impact of fast and ultra-fast fashion, pollution within the fashion industry, and the durability of the garments we consume. These conversations encouraged participants to think critically about their purchasing decisions and to recognise how small, everyday choices can reduce environmental impact while also saving money.

EcoUnity Day was not only about sustainability skills; it was also about fostering connection. The workshop brought together people from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds, creating an open environment to exchange ideas, experiences and perspectives. By learning together, participants strengthened a sense of community and shared responsibility towards more sustainable lifestyles.
Through initiatives like this, Arqus continues to empower students to co-create meaningful projects that promote sustainability, community engagement and positive local impact.
