Second Arqus webinar on English as a Medium of Instruction

07 Jan 2025The second webinar of this academic year, “Research themes and methods in EMI: An overview and an example study from Algeria“, will be jointly delivered by Yulia Kharchenko, assistant professor in applied linguistics and English (TESOL & EMI) at Maynooth University, and Sidi Ahmed Berrabah, a PhD candidate at the University of Limerick.
It will take place online on Thursday, 16 January 2025, from 12:00 to 13:00 (CET).
The webinar will overview existing themes and methodology in EMI research and showcase a mixed-methods doctoral research study on the challenges and opportunities of introducing EMI in post-colonial, multilingual settings.
Participants will review up-to-date research literature and methodology in EMI. They will also learn how mixed-methods research design can be applied in multilingual EMI settings and reflect on the strategic use of translanguaging as a pedagogical tool in multilingual education.
About the speakers
Dr Yulia Kharchenko is an assistant professor in applied linguistics and English (TESOL & EMI) at the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Maynooth University. Her research focuses on EMI educator beliefs and practices, multilingual pedagogy, and sustainable language teacher education. She is a co-convenor of the Arqus University Alliance community of practice centred around English as a medium of instruction in higher education.
Yulia previously worked with the EMI centre at Macquarie University, Sydney, a world-first that focuses exclusively on English as a Medium of Instruction and its associated practices.
Sidi Ahmed Berrabah is a PhD candidate at the University of Limerick specialising in English as a Medium of Instruction. His research explores the introduction of EMI in business degree programmes across three Algerian universities, focusing on how multilingual realities influence educational practices, policies and linguistic identities. Fluent in Arabic, French and English, Sidi has expertise in interpreting and translation and university teaching experience in research methodology, intercultural studies and English for specific purposes.
