One Health Online Symposium & Workshop

The Arqus Climate Change and Sustainable Development Living Lab organises this online scientific symposium on 17 June.

Titled “One Health and Pathogens, Parasites, and Vectors”, this one-day event will explore the One Health approach in the context of climate change, with a special focus on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), vector-borne pathogens, parasites, and microbial biodiversity. 

Arqus researchers, students and professionals are invited to attend this online symposium and workshop. The deadline to register is 16 June.

The symposium “One Health and Pathogens, Parasites, and Vectors” is designed to foster transdisciplinary collaboration, the symposium aims to spark innovative research ideas and lay the foundation for joint grant proposals in this critical and evolving field.

Participants will have the opportunity to present their research areas and methodologies. Due to time constraints, the number of presentations will be determined based on the volume of submissions.

This event is part of the Climate Change and Sustainable Development Arqus Living Lab, and supported by the French Embassy in Poland and the French Embassy in Germany, with the backing of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research of France, under the Weimar of Excellence Initiative 2024.

What is One Health and why should we care?

One Health is a collaborative, multisectoral, and transdisciplinary approach that recognizes the deep interconnection between human, animal and environmental health. It emphasises that the well-being of people is inseparable from the health of animals and the ecosystems we all share.

In the face of climate change, emerging infectious diseases, including mosquito- and tick-borne infections, and rising AMR, the One Health approach is more vital than ever. It empowers scientists, policymakers, and practitioners to work together across disciplines to:

  • Detect and prevent disease outbreaks
  • Understand how environmental changes affect disease dynamics
  • Promote sustainable and resilient health systems
  • Develop integrated solutions to global health challenges

This symposium is grounded in the One Health philosophy, with sessions exploring:

  • The impact of climate change on pathogens, parasites, and vectors
  • The environmental drivers of AMR
  • The ecology and evolution of disease agents
  • The role of microbial biodiversity in ecosystem health

By embracing One Health, we can co-create innovative, equitable, and sustainable strategies that protect both people and the planet — now and for future generations.

  • Session 1 – Scientific Symposium

Time: 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM (CEST)

Keynote Talks by experts from the Arqus Alliance and beyond.

Panel Discussions on cross-sectoral challenges and integrated solutions

This session will feature presentations from registered participants, showcasing research related to the One Health approach in the context of climate change. Topics may include AMR, vectors and VBPs, parasites, and microbial biodiversity. The number of presentations will be determined based on submissions and time availability.

  • Session 2 – Online Workshop: Ideation of Joint Scientific Projects

Time: 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM (CEST)

Interactive Workshops to co-create research concepts and explore collaboration tools

An interactive workshop focused on developing ideas for collaborative research projects. Participants will engage in group discussions to identify shared interests, explore funding opportunities, and begin shaping joint proposals aligned with the One Health and climate change themes.

  • Pathogens, Parasites & Vectors in a Changing Climate: Investigating how climate variability influences the emergence, distribution, and transmission of infectious agents and their carriers.
  • Environmental Drivers of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR): Examining the role of climate-related environmental changes—such as temperature shifts, pollution, and land use—in accelerating AMR.
  • Ecology, Evolution & Distribution of Parasites and Vectors: Understanding the ecological and evolutionary dynamics that shape the behavior and spread of parasites and vectors in a warming world.
  • Microbial Biodiversity & Ecosystem Health: Highlighting the importance of microbial communities in maintaining ecosystem resilience and their vulnerability to climate-induced disruptions.

This event is designed to bring together a diverse and dynamic community of individuals committed to advancing the One Health approach in the context of climate change. We warmly welcome:

  • Researchers and Early-Career Scientists: from Arqus Alliance institutions and beyond, especially those working in public health, environmental science, microbiology, veterinary medicine, and related fields.
  • Students from Arqus Universities: endergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to attend Session 1 of the symposium to gain insights into cutting-edge research and explore potential career and collaboration pathways.
  • Professionals and Stakeholders: including policymakers, public health officials, environmental agencies, NGOs, and others engaged in climate science, health policy, and One Health initiatives.
