23 Feb 2026The Arqus Network of Language Centre Directors met at the University of Padua from 11 to 13 February for an enriching three-day meeting on the topic of re-evaluating language evaluation. The central focus of the discussions was on the current state of language evaluation, and, in this context, participants had in-depth discussions on testing practices, quality assurance and the evolving opportunities and risks that artificial intelligence brings with it.
Directors shared their knowledge and experiences at their own institutions. In addition, they reflected on how AI is reshaping language evaluation and how to responsibly harness its potential. A highlight of the programme was an interactive workshop led by Dr Mariana Bisset, which sparked thoughtful debate and practical reflection. The participants also enjoyed a tour around the testing facilities at the University Language Centre (Centro linguistico di Ateneo, CLA) and addressed other strategic topics relevant to the network, including its Agenda 2030 and future joint activities.
Beyond the formal sessions, participants had the opportunity to experience Padua, a city known for its historic centre and long academic tradition. The hosts’ careful organisation and welcoming approach contributed positively to the meeting and supported a constructive atmosphere. The meeting concluded with a comprehensive review of all the activities the network has carried out to date and a clear outline of the next steps to take, reinforcing the shared commitment to excellence and innovation in language education.
