30 November2023

Type: Arqus Plurilingual and Intercultural Hub

Format: Conference

Open to: Teachers

The Arqus Plurilingual and Intercultural Hub invites students and academics to join the talk “English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in Germany: The double-edged sword of challenging and facilitating implicit language policy” by Dr. Clive Earls on Thursday, 30th December, at 15:15 (CET). The talk will be held in a hybrid format during this Hub’s Pre-Mobility Toolkit Meeting in Leipzig.

In the talk, Dr. Earls will discuss the impact of EMI on the risks of language attrition and cultural identity loss. It highlights the potential threat EMI poses to national languages like German while acknowledging its role in enhancing a country’s higher education system. The discussion aims to use Spolsky’s model to explore how EMI environments might reinforce English dominance while also potentially serving as a means to promote German language learning and positive attitudes toward it. Ultimately, it delves into the complex dynamics between EMI, language ideologies, and their impact on languages like German in educational settings.

Join the talk here (Passcode: 454562).
