Arqus invites academics and students to participate in the fifth webinar of the “9 months, 9 universities” series: “What do paparajotes and the Spanish Audiencia Nacional have in common?”, which will be broadcast live on the Arqus YouTube channel on 22nd February 2024 at 13:00 CET.

Legal translation is a type of specialised translation often seen as a complex and arduous area of specialisation; some even believe that it is only accessible to those with a legal background or very deep knowledge of law.

Part of this complexity is due to the lack of equivalence between legal systems. In the new talk of the series “What do paparajotes and the Spanish Audiencia Nacional have in common? Some notes on the translation of cultural references in legal translation”, we will analyse how this conceptual asymmetry can be solved with techniques used in the translation of non-specialised texts. After all, there is not so much difference between how to translate a tourist or gastronomic text and a legal text.

The talk will be of an informative nature and it is not necessary to have previous knowledge of legal translation.

Speaker:

Guadalupe Soriano Barabino is a Senior Lecturer in Translation at the University of Granada, Spain. She holds a PhD in Translation Studies (Legal Translation) as well as degrees in Law and in Translation and Interpreting. Her main fields of research are Legal Translation, Comparative Law Applied to Translation and Interculturality. She is a sworn translator-interpreter appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation for French and English.
She has been the local (University of Granada) representative on various work packages and has taken part in a wide range of activities. Since July 2023, she has been the Director for Arqus at the University of Granada.

“9 Months, 9 Universities” is the continuation of the series “Seven Months, Seven Universities”, offered during the first 3 years of the Alliance, when Arqus was formed by 7 universities. It was offered in the framework of the Action Line Multilingual and Multicultural University and focused on specific topics related to language and culture.
