Fourth webinar of the “9 months, 9 universities” series: “Collaborative assessment practices in Spanish-English translation class”

The advent of online teaching and learning, the increasing relevance of machine translation, and the changing nature of translation work practices all pose challenges to the teaching and evaluation of university translation modules.

This presentation will address the use of group work as a means of student assessment in the Spanish-English translation classroom. It will first cover some of the pedagogical rationales for using group work in this kind of module. It will also address issues relating to group composition, grading practises, and the impact on student performance. Finally, it will present findings gleaned from student feedback on group translation assignments.

Speaker:

Dr David Conlon is a lecturer in Spanish and Latin American Studies at Maynooth University, where he teaches modules on Spanish language, Spanish-English translation, and Spanish-language culture. His research is centred on Latin American literature and culture, with particular focuses on Latin American crime writing and Argentine literature and film. He is also a translator and has contributed translations to the Latin American Literature Today online journal. He recently completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education Teaching Learning and Assessment at Maynooth University’s Centre for Teaching and Learning.

“9 Months, 9 Universities” is the continuation of the series “Seven Months, Seven Universities”, offered during the first 3 years of the Alliance, when Arqus was formed by 7 universities. It was offered in the framework of the Action Line Multilingual and Multicultural University and focused on specific topics related to language and culture.
