The Arqus and ENLIGHT Alliances invite Open Science enthusiasts and knowledge seekers to participate in this webinar series on Open Science. The third webinar “Open Source Software and Open Licenses – A practical approach” will be held on 29th April 2024 from 10:00 to 11:30 CEST.
What is the relation between Open Science and Software Licenses? What is the difference between Free Software and Open Source? Which process should I follow to share my software? In this presentation, Pablo García, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Granada, will demystify various software licenses, ranging from permissive ones like MIT and Apache to copyleft licenses such as the GNU General Public License (GPL). He will demonstrate how the choice of a particular license can influence the accessibility, distribution, and reuse of scientific software, highlighting the pivotal connection between open-source licensing and the principles of Open Science.
Pablo García is Professor of the Department of Computer Engineering, Automatics and Robotics at the University of Granada and the current Director of the Free Software Office of the Vice-Rectorate of Digital Transformation. He has participated in 19 research projects, 4 transfer contracts with companies and has published more than 100 scientific papers. His interests include service-oriented computing, evolutionary computing, computational intelligence in video games, distributed algorithms, free software and open science.
