Maynooth University will host, for the first time, the Arqus PhD Career Week – ADVANCE CRT Summer School 2026 from 8–12 June. A large group of PhD researchers from across Europe will attend, including participants from Arqus and the Research Ireland Centre for Research Training in Advanced Networks for Sustainable Societies (ADVANCE CRT).

The event has been organised by the Graduate Research Academy, the ADVANCE CRT programme and the Arqus team at Maynooth University. Throughout the week, participants will engage in a comprehensive programme of career-focused sessions, workshops and networking activities. Topics will include skills development, career planning, and identifying appropriate funding opportunities for research. All activities have been designed to support PhD researchers in navigating an increasingly diverse employment landscape, with a strong emphasis on preparing participants for opportunities both within and beyond academia.

A highlight of the week will be a keynote address by Dr Norah Patten, who will share her journey to becoming Ireland’s first astronaut and demonstrate the wide-ranging opportunities that a PhD can open up across different sectors and professions. In addition, a Career Mentoring Session will bring together professionals from academia and industry, providing PhD researchers with valuable insights into a variety of career pathways and professional experiences.

The event will also feature a range of social and cultural activities designed to enhance the overall experience, particularly for participants visiting Ireland for the first time. These activities will offer attendees an opportunity to experience Irish culture and history while discovering the rich heritage of Maynooth through campus tours, scavenger hunts, and a wide range of interactive events.

As career pathways for PhD graduates continue to expand beyond traditional academic roles, initiatives such as the Arqus PhD Career Week – ADVANCE CRT Summer School 2026 play a vital role in equipping researchers with the skills, confidence, and awareness needed to navigate an evolving professional landscape. Hosting this initiative for the first time further reinforces Maynooth University’s commitment to supporting doctoral researchers and strengthening its engagement within Arqus Alliance.
