New workshop on intercultural communication skills for administrative staff

The University of Granada offers Arqus administrative and technical staff an intensive multi-session training online that helps them to develop and improve their intercultural self-competence and communication skills. The workshop is aimed at professionals that have contact with international students and staff members or external persons from abroad in their workplace and that, sometimes, can feel they are misunderstood or struggle to communicate well.

In this workshop participants will learn about common sources of misunderstandings, practice communication situations, understand better cultural differences and reflect on one’s own perceptions through different exercises. Participants will finally develop strategies on how to deal with cross-cultural situations and on how to have successful communication in everyday life at the university.

There are no prerequisites for this course, but participants are asked to join in with their microphone and computer camera on. The workshop will be held in English. CEFR B1 level as a minimum is recommended.

The workshop leaders are Ms. María José Pérez Contreras and Dr. Adolfo Sánchez Cuadrado from the University of Granada.

The online training has a total duration of 21 hours, with 7 sessions of 3 hours each. The sessions are planned by 4th, 6th, 9th, 11th, 13th, 16th and 18th May. All sessions are from 10:00 to 13:00 CEST. The workshop format is online (Zoom). Participants will receive an invitation to a Zoom meeting in a timely manner.

Please register here by 1st May 2022. The workshop consists of a series of interrelated sessions building up to the final results and attendees must commit to the whole course when they register.

The workshop is free of charge for staff members of the Arqus Alliance partner universities.

Please note: In order to ensure the quality of the session and for the benefit of the participants, the number of participants for this workshop is limited to a maximum of 14. There are 2 workshop places per partner university and these will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. If there are less than 2 registrations from one university, the remaining places will be allocated in list order regardless of affiliation to a partner university.

The Arqus workshop series on language and cross-cultural competence is offered in the framework of Action Line 4 Multilingual and Multicultural University (sub-line 4.5), led by Leipzig University. These workshops target academic and administrative staff at partner universities and focus on specific topics such as working and teaching through the medium of English, intercultural awareness in the classroom and outside, and inclusive language.
