From 16 to 19 March, the University of Lyon 1 hosted a group of twelve students from Maynooth University, all participants in the Global Changemakers programme. This four-day pilot mobility initiative was designed to offer an international experience to students whose degree programmes do not include mobility opportunities, as well as those unable to commit to long-term exchanges.

The programme began on Monday with an official welcome session led by the Vice-rector for Student Success at University of Lyon 1, followed by introductory activities and ice-breakers that set a collaborative tone for the week. Students then took part in a campus tour guided by peers, allowing them to explore university facilities, student services, and associations while gaining first-hand insight into student life in Lyon.

On the second day, participants engaged in a workshop on digital communication, interculturality, and scientific co-construction. This session encouraged students to reflect on how knowledge is shared across cultures and disciplines, while strengthening their communication skills in an increasingly globalised academic environment. In the afternoon, they explored the city through an interactive “Hunt in the city” activity, combining cultural discovery with teamwork. An optional visit to a photography exhibition provided further historical and cultural context, focusing on themes of memory and identity.

Wednesday’s programme focused on intercultural learning and international openness. Through a dedicated workshop, students examined the challenges and opportunities of engaging across cultures, sharing perspectives shaped by their diverse backgrounds and community involvement. Later, participants attended a session on interpersonal communication and leadership, which supported the development of key soft skills such as collaboration, active listening, and confidence in group settings. The day concluded with a creative workshop on body expression through dance, offering an alternative, experiential approach to communication and self-awareness.

On Thursday, the focus shifted towards interdisciplinarity and innovation. A hands-on workshop titled “Design meets science” invited students to explore how different fields can intersect to address complex societal challenges. This practical session encouraged creativity, problem-solving and collaborative thinking.

Throughout the programme, students also had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the cultural life of Lyon. Shared meals, informal gatherings, and evening activities (including local cultural events and celebrations) created space for meaningful intercultural exchange and peer connection beyond the classroom.

This initiative not only enriched the participants’ academic and personal development but also contributed to strengthening collaboration between Maynooth University and University of Lyon 1. It provided a valuable testing ground for more inclusive and flexible mobility formats within the Alliance, demonstrating how short-term programmes can broaden access to international experiences.

Overall, the Global Changemakers mobility in Lyon proved to be an inspiring and impactful experience – one that fostered learning, intercultural dialogue, and the co-creation of new ideas, while empowering students to take an active role in shaping their communities and futures.
