The Research Cluster “Times of Multilingualism, Migration and Cultural Transformation” at the University of Graz has launched the second edition of the Hammer-Purgstall Award, inviting applications from early-researchers whose work explores multilingualism, migration and processes of cultural and linguistic exchange.

Established in 2024 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of diplomat, orientalist and translator Joseph Freiherr von Hammer-Purgstall (1774-1856), the biennal award recognises outstanding scholarly and artistic contributions that examine linguistic and cultural transfer processes and their political, social and cultural impact across regions connected to Hammer-Purgstall’s work.

The distinction is awarded in two categories: a lifetime achievement award, selected through nomination, and an early-career researcher award, open to applications.

Early-career researchers from all disciplines are encouraged to apply if they obtained their PhD no more than five years before the application deadline. Career breaks, incluiding childcare and caregiving responsabilities will be taken into consideration.

Applicants are required to submit:

  • A curriculum vitae (maximum three pages)
  • A list of five recent publications or creative works relevant to the field
  • A two-page manifiesto reflecting on personal experiences, theoretical approaches, and/or practical engagement with multilingualism, incluiding the candidate’s vision of its role in cultural, academic or social contexts

Applications will be evaluated by an international jury of academic experts based on originality, scholarly or artistic merit and the depth of engagement with cultural and linguistic exchange processes.

The selected early-career researcher will receive a prize of €5,000.

Applications must be submitted in English as a single PDF file by 30 June 2026 to hammerpurgstall.preis@uni-graz.at
