How can scientific evidence, professional practice and international cooperation contribute to better breastfeeding support?

On 16 October 2026 from 09:45 to 14:00 CEST, the University of Minho and the University of Granada will bring together academics, healthcare professionals, students and anyone interested in maternal and child health for the online scientific meeting “Breastfeeding: Science, Care and Sustainability.”

Participation is free of charge and registered participants will receive a certificate of participation.

A meeting connecting science, care and practice

The event is organised within the framework of the Interinstitutional Micro-credential “Breastfeeding: Contributions and Strategies for Sustainability”, a joint initiative of the University of Minho and the University of Granada.

With a modular structure corresponding to 10 ECTS and a strong focus on scientific evidence, practical experience and international cooperation, the micro-credential aims to promote, support and strengthen breastfeeding as a key contribution to the health and well-being of mothers, children, families and communities.

The scientific meeting will showcase some of the work developed by students during the programme, creating a space for knowledge exchange and discussion between students, academics and professionals.

From evidence to practice

The programme will explore different dimensions of breastfeeding, combining scientific presentations with case-based reflections on real-world challenges and intervention strategies.

The morning will open with a welcome and presentation of the Interinstitutional Micro-credential, followed by “From evidence to practice – Conversations that make a difference”, a session focusing on situations and challenges related to breastfeeding support. Case studies developed by students during the programme will be presented by Marina González, Mónica Tavares and Cecília Silva.

After a short break, “Science in dialogue” will bring together student presentations on a range of current scientific topics, including:

  • Breastfeeding and the Gut Microbiome – Susana Vieira and Mónica Tavares
  • Breastfeeding and Maternal Mental Health – Diana Ribeiro and Patrícia Dias
  • Breastfeeding, Obesity and Metabolic Programming – Cristiana Gomes
  • Breast Milk and Immunity – Ana Ribeiro and Cátia Figueiredo

The programme will also include an international contribution from the University of Granada, reinforcing the meeting’s interinstitutional and international dimension and creating an opportunity to share perspectives between the academic communities of Portugal and Spain.
