27 Oct 2026The first edition of the Explore Europe programme started last week with a pre-departure meeting at Maynooth University. This Arqus initiative will take twelve Maynooth second year students to the University of Minho, in Braga, for a five-day programme designed to give students an international university experience through a shorter and more accessible form of Erasmus+ mobility.
On Wednesday, October 21, the group of students came together at Maynooth University for their final pre-departure session ahead of travel. This session counted with the presence of the University of Minho’s Arqus team, who attended online, along with the Vice-President in International at Maynooth University and a University of Minho’s students doing an Erasmus mobility at Maynooth.
Together they gave the students a clear view of the week’s programme and what to really expect when they arrive in Portugal. Sofia, UMinho’s Erasmus student, added her perspective as an international student and shared her own perspective along with practical advice and some of her favourite places to visit during their free time.
Patrick McCole, the Vice-President International at Maynooth University, wished them well ahead of the trip, and encouraged the students to make the most of the opportunity, to be curious, get involved and speak to people during the week. He also encouraged them to see the experience as a chance to build confidence, make connections and experience university life in a different European setting.
Alongside traditional semester and year-long Erasmus exchanges, short-term mobility offers students another way to experience a different country and university environment, build international connections and consider further opportunities abroad in the future.
