Today and tomorrow, 20th and 21st November 2023, the Rectors or their representatives from all Arqus universities hold their 11th Arqus Rectors’ Council meeting in Brussels.

Following the rotating principle for Arqus Rectors’ Council (RC) meetings, Rector Rui Vieira de Castro of the University of Minho chairs the meeting. President Eeva Leinonen of Maynooth University and Rector Pedro Mercado of the University of Granada participate for the first time in an Arqus Rectors’ Council meeting.

The main goal of this meeting is to discuss the Arqus governance and organizational structures and the major guidelines for the future research dimension, joint academic offer, intra-alliance mobility and societal engagement dimension of the Alliance. During the meeting participants will be updated on the latest Arqus developments and the policy environment, including meetings with external stakeholders.

The programme of activities will contain at least two other meetings, one with DG-EAC and another one with EUA. The former is aimed at discussing the current major issues for the European Universities Initiative and the challenges faced: European Degree (Label), Legal Entity, Monitoring Framework, financial sustainability and future Investment Pathway as well as global and research dimensions of Alliances.

In the latter, the debate will focus on the future and sustainability of the European Universities Initiative and its impact on the European university system. Discussions on general major issues such as microcredentials, innovation in learning and teaching, research assessment and other issues of interest to the Rectors and Vice-Rectors will be held too.

The Arqus Rectors’ Council meetings present an excellent opportunity for advancement and growth in the key policies and strategies of the Alliance.
