The summer school will take place from 11th to 15th September 2023 in Wrocław, and will focus on new understanding of democracy in the early 21st century.

“Summer School on Democracy: In search of new understanding of democracy” is the next edition of the Summer School on Democracy that the Institute of Political Science of the University of Wrocław organises since 2013. The school will provide young scholars with the opportunity to engage in a critical reflection on democracy and its evolution in the early 21st century.

The summer school will take place from 11th to 15th September 2023 in Wrocław, and it is expected to host more than 20 participants. During the five days of school, participants will have the opportunity to attend lectures and workshops, and share their points of view on different dimensions of democratic processes in a period of dynamic technological, social and political change, observed at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. The detailed topics are supposed to be related to the scientific interest of individual participants. However, it is expected that all participants present the draft of their papers or research proposals, and by having feedback during the summer school they might improve their quality.

In addition, they will have a chance to visit institutions in Wrocław such as the Office of the European Parliament in Poland, museums, and other historical institutions.

The school will provide a unique space for open and frank discussions on sensitive topics related to the understanding of democracy. It also offers an excellent opportunity for networking and exchanging views among young European professionals from different regions of the continent. Overall, the event contributes to a better understanding of democratic processes, possible for future implementation in various fields of research, social and political activity.

The programme is designed for 20 PhD students (10 from Wrocław and 10 from abroad). Eligible applicants can be from disciplines of political science, sociology, history, law, philosophy, economics or communication.

Candidate selection will be based on a competitive basis – assessment of the abstracts of proposed presentations.

Potential participants are required to submit an abstract addressing various aspects of contemporary debates on democracy. The abstract should contain at least 250 words and be submitted in PDF format. The abstract will serve as the basis for a presentation throughout the school′s duration. The school′s agenda will include lectures, as well as presentations by participants and a roundtable discussion.

Abstracts can be sent to summerschool@uwr.edu.pl. The deadline for submitting the abstracts is 30th June 2023. Accepted applicants will be notified by 7thJuly 2023.
