Arqus Mobility Compass

Students on the move Staff on the Move

Living abroad can be a rollercoaster of emotions: new friends, new challenges, new habits…
In this section, we offer some ideas to help you feel grounded during your mobility experience and ready to embrace the unexpected.

Living a place rather than simply staying in it, exploring your surroundings and learning to respect and protect the environment, can be key to feeling at home in your host city.

Understanding and engaging with a different culture can take your learning and personal growth to a whole new level.

Green Mobility

Solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of international mobility are an important topic of debate for European institutions. The changes introduced to the Erasmus+ program in recent years, such as the bonus grant for green travel, are evidence of a new approach supported by updated policies and tools.

Arqus is not indifferent to these challenges, nor is the Erasmus generation and the many students and trainees who are calling not only for new opportunities, but also for a better planet.

As an Alliance that places climate change and sustainable development among its thematic priorities, we are committed to developing initiatives that raise climate awareness within our communities.

More specifically, in 2024 Arqus launched the Green Mobility Days, a comprehensive program of local initiatives involving our univer-cities in promoting a greener approach to study or work exchanges.

GMD are organized every year and take a broad perspective on international mobility. Reducing your impact on the ecosystem is not only about choosing sustainable transport to reach your host institution, but also about reflecting on daily habits and exploring eco-friendly solutions in your new environment.

You can visit our news webpage to check if GMDs are now running at the Arqus university where you are studying, and join the activities to discover new ways to make your stay more sustainable, while having fun and exploring the city.

You can also apply to the Tell Your Mobility Story a video testimonial competition aimed at promoting a green and sustainable culture within the Alliance. Reach out to your international relations office for more information!

If you still don’t know where to start from and need some inspiration instead, you can read the article by Leipzig Arqus project officer Ninon Böhme, check out the Sustainable travel guide powered by ESN Padova, visit our sustainability map (in progress and waiting for your suggestions!) or check out some of the tips from our partners:

Granada

ESN Granada organizes a lot of activities focused on the environment in Granada. Students are advised to follow them on social media.

Asociación La Huella Verde: they organize a lot of activities in Granada and its province (tree planting, second-hand fashion shows, environmental clean-ups, etc.). You can follow them on social media, where they publish all the activities they organize.

Some Faculties/Schools in Granada have a bike lending service. The number of bikes is limited and their allocation is done at the beginning of each academic year through a dedicated call. We invite you to look for this information on the website of your faculty or school, where the call will be published!

Maynooth

Maynooth Green Campus

“MGC” (Green Campus | Maynooth University): The Maynooth Green Campus Committee provides advice and guidance on the following aspects/goals of MU.

Orientation Week:

During our Orientation Weeks in September and January, the MGC organizes a Re-Use Pop-Up Shop where students can borrow or swap different items such as clothes, books, cooking utensils, etc. A Re-Use Pop-Up Centre is available at the end of the semester/academic year for students to return items that they do not want to bring home with them, but which may be useful to students coming in the next semester/academic year, for example, pots, pans, clothes, towels, bedclothes, etc. All items must be clean and dry. Any surplus items are donated to local charities.

There is also a Biodiversity Walk that takes place during Orientation. These walks focus on the flora and fauna on MU’s campus.

Water Fountains on campus:

There are a number of water fountains available all around the campus. Some are specifically drinking fountains, but students can fill their reusable water bottles from many filling stations as well. A map of all water fountain locations: https://www.maynoothuniversity.ie/sites/default/files/assets/document//Drinking%20Water%20Fountains%20Updated%20January_2023.pdf

WEEE Ireland Battery Boxes:

Little blue boxes that are available all over campus for students to return old batteries for recycling. Vapes/e-cigarettes can now also be put in these boxes.

Note: WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment.

Public Transport and the Leap Card:

Maynooth is very well serviced by bus and train routes. Students can apply online for either a Student Leap Card or a Young Adult Leap Card to avail of discounted fares on Transport for Ireland (TFI) services. Which card students should apply for will depend on what age they are. More information can be found at the links below:

Cultural shock management

Before leaving your country, you may have imagined your future stay abroad as a special stage in your life, a great step to get to know other cities, universities, ways to have fun, or simply “a change of scenery.” But when you change cultures you may find yourself somewhat disoriented and alone. This is completely normal, since when you leave your country, you move away from the people and circumstances in which you have learned to live in society for years. The impact of this change is often called culture shock.

This phenomenon usually manifests itself in different ways

  • Outbursts of anger when faced with small inconveniences;
  • Irritability;
  • Feeling sad most of the time;
  • Unexplained crying;
  • Boredom;
  • Missing the family a lot;
  • A new and intense feeling of loyalty to your own culture;
  • Overeating or loss of appetite;
  • Need to sleep more than usual;
  • Headaches;
  • Stomach aches;
  • Excessive concern about small pains;
  • Loss of ability to work effectively;
  • Difficulty concentrating;
  • Excessive concern for hygiene.

This is an extensive list of possible symptoms after changing culture, although not everyone experiences culture shock. Only a few items may reflect what you feel, even just a couple of them. Of course, if you had any of these problems before (e.g., headaches or stomach aches) it is wise to visit a doctor before chalking it up to possible culture shock.

There are various ways to prevent the onset of its symptoms

You can do many things to try to overcome culture shock. Trying several of these strategies will be more effective than trying just one. And even if you’re not experiencing culture shock, you can prevent the onset of its symptoms:

  • Stay active: Spend part of your time outside your room or apartment. Observe locals in their own culture. Try to look for common traits or cultural practices similar to yours. Visit parks, libraries, sporting events or shopping centers. Look. Listen. Learn. This process increases your knowledge and facilitates understanding of the differences in habits, customs and social relationships.

  • Make friends with locals: Meet local people. Make questions. Try to answer questions about your own country, so that you and your local friends can compare your ways of life. It also helps to make friends from your own or other cultures, so you can compare your impressions.

  • Read: At the University you have numerous free student magazines at your disposal. You will also find interesting books and daily newspapers in your library. Reading it can help you understand the new culture in greater depth.

  • Do physical exercise: Find some physical activity that you enjoy and release the accumulated tension.

  • Work on the language: One of the most important steps you can take to facilitate your adaptation is to improve your level of the local language. It’s easier to learn the details of the culture when you know its language. Keep an eye out for new or unusual phrases. Ask about words you don’t understand. Many people will be happy to explain words that are new to you, so don’t hesitate to ask when you don’t understand something.

  • Meet other international students: Thousands of students from other countries study at Arqus universities. You can bet many of them are experiencing the same fit problems that you may have. Talk to them about how they are handling the culture change.

  • Remember your family: If your family came with you to the country where you will be studying, remember that they may also be experiencing culture shock. These same guidelines can help them. If you came alone, remember that your family will want to know about you. Writing or calling them regularly will help maintain your relationship with them and not feel alone at any time. For this, the Internet can be your best ally.

  • Be patient: Culture shock is something that many international students experience in some form while they are here. Remember that the problem is not permanent. Simply be aware of what is happening to you, and give yourself time to get over it.

Tell Your Mobility Story

TYMS is an Arqus initiative dedicated to students who want to share their international mobility experience through video story telling.

You don’t need to be an influencer or the best of content makers to take part in TYMS. If you are willing to communicate to other students what planning, traveling, studying abroad looks and feels like, you just need to pick your phone or sit in front of a webcam and tell us your point of view.

For the new edition, TYMS has merged with the GMD Award, giving you the opportunity to take part by sharing video testimonials focused on sustainable practices and green mobility during your experience abroad.
