The course provides professional skills in eco-technological sectors, particularly in synthetic biology, biodecontamination, and bioremediation, addressing the emerging need for sustainable eco-technological solutions to counteract anthropogenic pollution.

To reach this, participants will acquire knowledge in microbiology and in synthetic biology, specifically in the interactions between microorganisms and the environment (air, water and soil) and they will learn how to apply this knowledge to various contexts of environmental pollution, using multiple techniques and skills such as:

  • Genetic engineering techniques to design engineered bacteria.
  • Analyse the process involved in the decontamination of major environmental pollutants.
  • Asses the effectiveness and efficiency of bioremediation strategies.
  • Identify key parameters for optimising bioremediation strategies.

The main objective of this course is that by the end of the months participants will be able to develop innovative bioremediation strategies by applying synthetic biology, design and evaluate bioremediation approaches through genetic engineering of microorganisms, and asses broader impacts of synthetic biology by considering ecological ethical and regulatory aspects.
