04 May 2026On 28 April 2026, representatives of European University alliances, Arqus among them, gathered in Vienna for the event “Paving the Way Towards the Universities of the Future – Impulses for the Higher Education Strategy 2040”. The meeting brought together key stakeholders to reflect on the transformative role of alliances in shaping the future of higher education in Europe.
Hosted at the MuseumsQuartier Vienna, the event was organised by coordinators from Montanuniversität Leoben (EURECA-PRO) and University of Applied Sciences St. Pölten (E3UDRES2), representing Austrian-led alliances. All European university alliances with Austrian participation were invited, each showcasing their work through dedicated stands, fostering exchange and increasing visibility.
The programme featured a series of keynote speeches addressing the opportunities and challenges for European Universities as drivers of innovation. Speakers included representatives from the European Commission, national authorities, universities and student organisations, highlighting the multi-level engagement behind the initiative. Eva-Maria Holzleitner, Federal Minister for Women, Science and Research, delivered official remarks, underlining the strategic importance of the European Universities Initiative for Austria and Europe.
A central highlight of the event was the panel discussion titled “European Universities as Innovation Drivers for Future Universities?”. Panelists from several alliances and institutions explored lessons learned, current strategies, and future development paths, contributing to the ongoing design of Austria’s Higher Education Strategy 2040.
The event also provided space for networking and dialogue through the “United Campuses of Europe!?” session and a closing meet-and-greet, reinforcing collaboration among alliances and stakeholders.
Since its launch, the European Universities initiative has become one of the most significant developments in European higher education policy, fostering deep transnational cooperation. Today, 73 alliances are working on joint educational models, innovative learning approaches, and strengthened research and innovation capacities.
The Vienna event offered an opportunity to take stock of these achievements and to reflect on how alliances can further contribute to building resilient, competitive, and forward-looking universities. As discussions on the Higher Education Strategy 2040 continue, European University Alliances remain key actors in shaping the universities of the future.
