ISLYE Exchange Programme – Lyon

If the French market is interesting for you, come to…

Lyon

Welcome to Lyon, the culinary capital of France and a gem of rich history and vibrant culture. Third largest city after Paris and Marseille, Lyon is the capital city of the Auvergne-Rhone Alpes region at the heart of France. Located halfway between sea and mountains, Lyon is famous for its cultural, economic, sporting and gastronomic dynamism but above all its quality of life. Lyon is also the city of diversity, both architecturally and naturally with beautiful historical monuments (Fourviere Cathedral, Gallo Roman Theater,…) and wonderful parks (Parc de la Tête d’Or, Miribel, …). You can wander through the troubles of Vieux Lyon and enjoy a nice meal in its traditional bouchons. Come and explore Lyon, where history, gastronomy, and modernity seamlessly blend to create a unique and captivating destination.

A university at the cutting edge of innovation, Lyon 1 delivers highquality education and research excellence within an attractive environment. Its international reach extends through the fields of science, technology, health and sport. Lyon 1 is also a university that is committed to support, creation and sharing with respect to everyone within its community.

Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University

Lyon does not have a long and illustrious past as a university city. During the Middle Ages, it was not bestowed with a Sorbonne or the scientific prowess that is the pride of Montpellier, Oxford or Salamanca. Its university is relatively recent. It is the law of 10 July 1896 that enabled it to group together the university of the former independent faculties (science, medicine, law and arts) the oldest of which go back to 1808 (faculty of science).

The Claude Bernard Lyon 1 university was founded by decree in December 1970. It now has 49000 students, studying on 3 main campus and 11 geographical sites through 16 degrees and 50 masters. Furthermore, it is the home of 62 research units.

Startup suport at the university

The Lyon 1 University campus hosts one incubator from the Entrepreneurship Center Lyon Saint-Etienne, an initiative supported by the University of Lyon that aims at raising awareness on entrepreneurship and providing support for students and young graduates at all stages of business creation, from ideation to acceleration. Every year, around 20 startups (which represents approximately 30 student-entrepreneurs) are incubated on site and can benefit from numerous workshops, coaching and financing support.
