These are the questions at the heart of Dominique Rocher’s research project, which was selected for COP28 in Dubai and won the the EDHE National Student Entrepreneurship Competition 2023 in South Africa.
For this 25th episode of the Arqus Knowledge Pills “How can bioplastics contribute to a more sustainable future?”, we invited Dominique Rocher, Arqus Talent Fund scholarship awardee and researcher in Microbiology & Environmental Science and co-founder of Urobo and whose project has been recently selected in South Africa and COP28 in Dubai. In this episode, we dive into the importance of bioplastics in mitigating the plastic pollution crisis.
Dominique Rocher is one of the PhD students awarded the Arqus Talent Scholarship Fund designed to attract and retain talent at the postgraduate level from around the world. Thanks to this initiative, together with Wessel Myburgh, co-founder of Urobo Biotech, she will be able to develop her doctoral project at the University of Padua.

Dominique Rocher is a researcher and co-founder dedicated to addressing one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. With a background in environmental science, biotechnology, and entrepreneurship, she is currently pursuing a PhD at Stellenbosch University and the University of Padua with one of the prestigious Arqus Talent Fund scholarships. Her journey is driven by a belief in the necessity of tackling the plastic pollution crisis on a worldwide-scale. She’s also the co-founder of the startup Urobo Biotech, which is actively contributing to the broader goal of decarbonization and sustainability.
