20 Apr 2026On 10–11 April 2026, the Arqus Student Council gathered at the University of Claude Bernard Lyon 1 for a two-day in-person gathering, bringing together student representatives from across the Alliance. The event combined institutional exchange, student-led discussions, and strategic planning aimed at strengthening student engagement within Arqus.
Seven student representatives from five partner universities—Graz, Leipzig, Granada, Lyon 1, and Maynooth—attended the meeting. Together, they shared best practices, addressed common challenges, and moved forward on key student-led initiatives.
The programme opened with a guided tour of the University of Lyon 1’s main campus, La Doua, highlighting key facilities and student spaces. This was followed by an official session with university departments—including Culture, Library Documentation, Handicap, Student Guidance and Career, and Student Life—alongside student representatives. Discussions focused on inclusion, student support systems, and campus life.
The meeting highlighted innovative approaches across the Alliance. Leipzig University presented initiatives supporting student engagement, such as dedicated roles for inclusion projects. Graz shared insights into national legislation requiring working groups on inclusion, while Granada emphasized the central role of student organisations in welcoming new students. Lyon 1 showcased inclusive practices, including flexible administrative procedures and personalised support programmes, which were particularly well received.
Discussions also addressed shared challenges, such as accessibility in historical buildings, support for student parents, and the need for spaces adapted to diverse student needs.
The programme included a meeting with local student representatives and associations, such as La Planck, providing valuable insights into student life and representation in France. These exchanges contributed to a deeper understanding of each university’s approach to key issues.
The centrepiece of the visit was the Student Council meeting, where participants discussed key strategic priorities. Topics included the development of a Welcome Guide for new Council members, upcoming activities and events, internal governance, and the Council’s long-term role within Arqus.
Members also reviewed ongoing projects and new initiatives, such as improving communication tools and exploring collaborative activities between partner universities. These discussions reflect the Council’s commitment to structuring its work and amplifying its impact across the Alliance.
The meeting was widely regarded as a success, underscoring the value of in-person exchanges in fostering collaboration and building a shared vision. It also highlighted the Student Council’s growing influence in representing student perspectives and shaping the future of Arqus.
