Democracy, inclusion and cooperation: Celebrating Europe Day 2026
|
09 May 2026On 9 May, we celebrate once again Europe Day, reaffirming the values of unity, democracy and cooperation that shape the European project.
We commemorate the values of unity, cooperation and peace that lie at the heart of the European project. More than seven decades after the Schuman Declaration laid the foundations for a new era of collaboration in Europe, the date continues to serve as an opportunity to reflect on the importance of defending democratic principles and strengthening solidarity across borders in an increasingly complex global context.
As Europe Day reminds us each year, the European project is built not only on economic and political cooperation, but also on a shared commitment to democracy, peace, solidarity, human rights and respect for diversity. At a time marked by geopolitical instability, growing social polarisation, climate emergency and rapid technological transformation, reaffirming these common values has become more necessary than ever.
Universities have a fundamental role to play in this context. As spaces of critical thinking, pluralism and democratic participation, they contribute to the generation and dissemination of knowledge while fostering inclusive, resilient and socially engaged communities. Through education, research, innovation and cultural exchange, European universities help prepare citizens capable of addressing complex global challenges with responsibility, openness and cooperation.
Within the framework of Arqus, this commitment is reflected in a long-term vision centred on collaboration, inclusion and public responsibility. Since its foundation in 2018, our Alliance has worked to strengthen innovative learning, multilingualism, equality, diversity and international cooperation, while promoting a more connected and socially responsive European Higher Education Area.
Today, these principles remain at the core of the Alliance’s shared mission. Faced with threats to democratic freedoms and increasing uncertainty across Europe and beyond, Arqus reiterates its belief in the value of science, evidence-based knowledge and international cooperation as essential tools for human progress and sustainable societal development. Democracy is not understood as an abstract concept, but as a daily practice that must be defended through participation, dialogue, inclusion and education.
Europe Day therefore offers an opportunity not only to celebrate the achievements of European cooperation, but also to reflect on the responsibilities that come with it. Strengthening democratic values, protecting fundamental rights and fostering mutual understanding across cultures are collective tasks in which universities –and university alliances such as Arqus– have a vital role to play in shaping Europe’s future.
We also invite readers to explore three interviews with researchers we have prepared, which offer complementary reflections on the present challenges and future prospects of Europe from different academic and disciplinary perspectives. In addition, a series of social media content has been created to further engage audiences in this collective reflection on European values and the role of universities in today’s context.
Happy Europe Day!
