On 20 May, Guadalupe Soriano, director of Arqus UGR, led a workshop entitled ‘Governance of alliances – what is the key to success?’ as part of the meeting of Czech universities in European University Alliances held at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen on 20 and 21 May. She was invited by DZS|CZELO, the Czech national agency for international education and research.

The workshop, attended by around thirty participants from the 13 European University Alliances with partners in the Czech Republic, focused on analysing the existing governance structures within the European University Alliances, using the Arqus governance model as a benchmark, and on discussing the challenges and best practices arising from the different existing structures.

Some of the challenges identified by the participants were the difficulty of actively involving university communities in the activities of the alliances, the challenge sometimes posed by the dissociation between the project and the alliance, or the implications, benefits and possible negative aspects of alliances acquiring legal personality.
