Breastfeeding – contributions and strategies for sustainability

Arqus Micro-credential

The University of Minho (Portugal) and the University of Granada (Spain) have joined forces to launch an innovative, interinstitutional microcredential dedicated to breastfeeding, aiming to train professionals and students in the promotion, support, and evaluation of this essential practice for maternal and child health.

With a modular structure of 10 ECTS credits, this training combines scientific rigor, practical experience, and international cooperation, valuing Iberian cultural and linguistic diversity. The microcredential is organized into two training units:

Unit 1: Breastfeeding — Concepts and Guidelines

Unit 2: Breastfeeding in the Context of Practice

Participants will explore the fundamentals of lactation, including international recommendations, public policies and breastfeeding strategies in Portugal and Spain. The programme also covers breast anatomy and physiology, the composition of maternal milk and the biopsychosocial factors that influence breastfeeding experiences.

Special attention is given to communication and mother–baby-centred care, helping participants develop empathetic, culturally sensitive and evidence-based support skills. The course also addresses common breastfeeding challenges, clinical decision-making in complex situations and practical approaches to monitoring and supporting lactation over time.

Finally, participants will learn how to use assessment and support tools and develop personalised breastfeeding plans adapted to the needs of each mother and child.
